The study focuses on the criminal case brought against Appius in the immediate aftermath of the publication of the Twelve Tables, which was followed by the enactment of the Valerian-Horatian legislation. This case is remarkable for a number of reasons, which will be elucidated in the conclusion, following a comprehensive examination of the following three key aspects: 1. the fundamental facts on which the plebeian trial was based; 2. the procedural guarantees that all Roman citizens were provided with in 449 BCE; 3. the circumstances in which, according to the ius sacrum, such guarantees were to be disregarded.
